I’d like to take a few minutes to talk about 2 exciting new programs that the  Boone County Board of Education are rolling out.

The first is the Boone County Early College program where Juniors and Seniors at Boone County, Conner, Cooper, and Ryle High School will spend half of their day taking courses out at Gateway Community & Technical College, taught by faculty from Gateway, NKU or Thomas More either in the morning or the afternoon session.  Transportation will be provided to and from the school.  There are a number of things that make this a FANTASTIC opportunity for students who are  already focused on their studies and definitely plan to go to college.

First, students will have the ability to earn up to 24 credit hours each year.  And if they go through the program as a Junior and Senior they could graduate from their high school with potentially 48 Credit Hours!  That is AWESOME and what a great way to help eliminate many of the Gen Ed classes a student would have to take anyway when they enter college.  Plus it allows a student to potential reduce the number of years they have to go to college (depending upon their future major) and allow him/her to discover their future career earlier by trying out more core curriculum classes.

Second, the price for these classes is only $250.00 (OR $83.33 per credit hour)!  That is an INCREDIBLE bargain when you compare what you would have to pay per credit hour at any of the Kentucky Public Universities  (Ex. NKU is $353/credit hr, UK is $421/credit hr and UofL is $427/credit hr). Think of the savings you will receive by doing this great program!

Third, unlike Advanced Placement classes where you get one shot at scoring a 3, 4 or 5 on the final AP exam to potentially earn College Credit, with a College course, not only are you getting the benefit of a weighted GPA, BUT you are getting the chance to earn that college credit from day one.  Does, it take hard work? You’d better believe it but is it worth it? ABSOLUTELY!

The Second new offering is the Boone County School of Design.  This program is focused on Interactive Design the first year with students taking 4 Certification Programs: Introduction to Media Arts, Interactive Design, Moving Image – Animation and Virtual Design.  While these classes do not currently give College Credit, they do offer students the ability to get certified in courses that are in HIGH DEMAND in the Visual Arts Industry where the Greater Cincinnati area is seeing explosive career and business opportunities.

Thank you Boone County Board of Education for offering these terrific College Credit and Certification opportunities to our high school students.
