When researching the colleges your student is considering applying to, it is very important to consider geographic fit. This college will be their home-away-from-home for the next 4 years and so you need to make sure it is a place where they will thrive, not just survive. To determine if a college is a good geographic fit for your student, map out the distances of each of your students short list schools and consider transportation options.

Taking into consideration the distance a college is from home should be as important as deciding on the price, major, and social settings of a student’s future school. If your student isn’t planning (or allowed) to bring a car to campus their freshman year, then it is critical to scope out nearby airports, train stations, and bus stations to make sure future transportation is convenient and reasonably priced. Better to have these open conversations now versus waiting and discovering later that what your student thought they wanted, turns out to be a big mistake in the end.
