The summer months offer a powerful window of opportunity for high school students, especially those preparing for college. While it’s important that students take time to rest and recharge, the break from school also provides a chance to make meaningful progress toward their future. Parents often wonder how their teens can use this time wisely without overwhelming themselves—and the answer lies in balance and intention.
Summer is a great time for students to explore interests that may not fit into their regular school schedule. Volunteering, internships, summer jobs, or even passion projects can help them develop real-world skills, build their resume, and discover what they enjoy. These activities also stand out on college applications, not just because they’re impressive, but because they show initiative and character.
Academic readiness shouldn’t be neglected either. Rising juniors and seniors can use this time to prepare for standardized tests, explore college options, and get a head start on college essays prior to the beginning of the application season. A few hours a week of focused effort now can ease a lot of stress later in the year. It’s also good to begin conversations about what kind of college environment would be the right fit—urban or rural, large, or small, close to home or farther away. These early discussions help shape more intentional college lists when the time comes.
At College and Beyond, we understand how overwhelming this process can feel for families, especially when trying to support a teenager through such an important and uncertain phase of their life. That’s why we work alongside students and parents to offer guidance that feels supportive, not stressful. Whether it’s mapping out a college prep plan, providing essay feedback, or helping students identify the right extracurricular activities, we focus on what makes sense for each individual student.
Summer doesn’t need to be packed with pressure—it just needs to be purposeful. With the right support and a little bit of planning, high school students can head into the school year feeling confident, clear, and a few steps ahead.
