If you’re preparing for college, you’ve likely heard of the FAFSA and the CSS Profile. Both are financial aid forms, but they serve different purposes and can be confusing if you don’t know how they work. Here’s a simple breakdown.
The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is the form every family should complete. It’s free and used by almost all colleges to determine eligibility for federal and state aid like grants, loans, and work-study. The FAFSA looks at income, assets, and household size to calculate your Student Aid Index (SAI) which is the number colleges use to estimate your need. Bottom line: no FAFSA, no federal aid.
The CSS Profile is different. Managed by the College Board, it’s required by around 400 colleges and institutions to award their own institutional aid. This form asks for more detailed financial information such as home equity, the amount you contribute to your retirement accounts, and detailed business records to give schools a fuller picture of your situation. Unlike the FAFSA, there’s a small fee to submit it to each college asking for it, though fee waivers are available.
In short, the FAFSA opens doors to federal and state aid, while the CSS Profile can unlock additional grants and scholarships from private colleges. Understanding which forms your student needs and how to complete them accurately can make a big difference in your financial aid package.
And things can get really complicated if parents are divorced. Both forms handle this situation differently and mistakes are common.
