When building your student’s college list, it is important to consider if the schools are a right fit for your student: academically, financially, socially, and geographically. The best way to help figure this out is to schedule a visit to each college on their list, preferably in person or worse case – online. You may get lucky and find a great virtual tour by CLICKING HERE.
Many families make the mistake of trusting other sources when they are building their lists such as family and friends (who have the best of intentions with their suggestions), online college reviews, or putting too must emphasis on how a magazine ranks colleges. As we have recently seen, it is possible for a highly selective college (Columbia) to be removed from parts of a ranking magazine when they can’t verify their stats to be truly accurate. Creating your college short list this way is a big mistake because your selection criteria may be different for all kinds of reasons from the sources you are relying on and let’s face it, nobody talks about the funding side of college.
You and your student need to create an unbiased list of potential colleges that fit them and also fit your family’s budget. There is nothing worse than a student being accepted academically to a college – but in turn being rejected financially by them leaving a major funding gap that is often covered with loans. Please do not do this to your family!
Another great option to consider is my FREE online College Money Report which you can find by CLICKING HERE. This will allow you to plug in your student’s academic credentials, your family’s financial details, and up to 3 colleges and see what your Expected Family Contribution will be, how much grant or scholarship money your daughter or son may receive, and what the net price will be for these schools. You will be super glad to have these details when the spring of their senior year rolls around.
