When building your student’s college list, it is important to consider if the schools are a right fit for your student: financially, academically, socially, and geographically. The best way to help figure this out is to schedule a visit to each college on their list, preferably in person or worse case, online.
Many families make the mistake of trusting other sources when they are building their lists such as family and friends, online college reviews, or putting too must emphasis on how a magazine ranks colleges. Plus, do not forget that in the past a highly selective college misstated their stats to be listed higher in a magazines college rankings. Imagine that. Creating your college short list this way is a big mistake because your selection criteria may be different for all kinds of reasons from the sources you are relying on. And let’s face it, very few rankings ever talk about the funding side of college.
You and your student need to create an unbiased list of potential colleges that fit them and also fit your family’s budget. There is nothing worse than a student being accepted academically to a college but in turn being rejected financially, leaving a major funding gap that many families often end up covering with loans.
Another great option to consider is my FREE online College Money Report which you can find on my website www.collegeandbeyondllc.com – This will allow you to plug in your student’s academic credentials, your family’s financial details, and up to 3 colleges and see what your Federal Student Aid Index (formerly Expected Family Contribution) will be, how much grant or scholarship money your daughter or son may receive, and what the net price will be for these schools. You will be super glad to have these details prior to the spring of their senior year.
