As a parent, it may seem easy and normal to want to guide your student into a certain career path or college because let’s face it, you know them better than anyone else and just want to help them out. However, the truth is, your son or daughter really needs to be in the driver’s seat when it comes to planning their future. Ok, I get it, easy for someone on the outside like me to say especially if your child has absolutely no idea what they want to do in the future. Encouraging them to take full advantage of their free high school resources such as career assessment tools and college fit assessments is a great next step. They can also use the resources that are available at their future college in their Career Center.
It can be scary for your son or daughter to find a college major if they haven’t completed any research or found something they find truly interesting. To ensure they don’t change their mind halfway through college, make sure they are fully invested in their chosen degree from the start. Students who chose their major exclusively based on the guidance they received from friends, family, relatives, or acquaintances may question their decision in the future and look to blame someone for the path they chose. Success can be achieved if they do their own research and come to a final decision on their own.
To help your student discover their future career path, encourage them to take the time to think about what their calling might be. What are they passionate about, have them answer the who, what, when, where, how, and most importantly why they do what they do. If they are still unsure about their future, advise them to write down their likes and dislikes to gauge career opportunities that might fit them. Have them set up interviews or job shadow individuals in careers they are considering so they can take them for a test ride.
Finding what your student is passionate about will increase their chances of choosing the right path to follow in college. If they are still stuck, you may want to consider reaching out to us at College and Beyond LLC.
