One of the hardest challenges students face when they head off to college is finding a balance between schoolwork and their social life. Some students get totally consumed with one of these at the expense of the other. There is nothing worse than finding out your student has been placed on academic probation. Success can be achieved when they find a good balance between both.
It is important for your son or daughter to develop some key habits, characteristics, or skills to become a well-rounded student, so they can be better prepared to enter life and the workforce in the future.
These habits, characteristics or skills include:
– Being goal-oriented
– Developing solid Time Management skills
– Seeking help when needed – tutoring is good
– Volunteering in the community
– Taking time for themselves
– Enjoying learning
– Making earning good grades a priority
– Getting involved with extracurricular activities and club or rec sports
– Identifying and join the right networks of people
To help your student become well-rounded, have them: prioritize their academics and extra-curriculars, study for exams, complete homework/essays on time, attend extra help sessions, get involved in clubs at school, or volunteer in their local college community. This will ensure they meet new people socially while keeping up with their school work and other requirements. It is also a great idea for students to get involved right from the start of their freshman year, but also know it is never too late to jump in and finish strong!
If you have a junior – now is the time to take action and jump into the college process. And if you have a student who has aspirations to apply to top colleges in the future – this process should start as early as their freshman year.
