When researching potential colleges, academics and rankings often take center stage—but don’t overlook one of the most important factors: social fit.
Social fit is all about how well your student connects with the campus culture, student body, and social opportunities available. After all, this college will be their home-away-from-home for the next four years. It should be a place where they can thrive, not just survive.
Start by listing your student’s current hobbies, interests, and causes they’re passionate about. Are they into dance, sports, student government, or volunteering? If they loved being on their high school dance team but don’t want the time commitment of a college team, maybe a campus dance club would be a perfect match—fun, flexible, and full of new friends.
Encourage your student to explore what each college offers in terms of clubs, Greek life, service opportunities, intramural sports, and campus events. A great way to get a feel for campus life is by checking out the school’s social media—look at what they post and promote. You’ll quickly see what the vibe is and whether it feels like a good fit.
Better yet, plan an official campus visit while classes are in session. Let your student walk the halls, see the students, and picture themselves there. It’s much better to hear a “no” before applying than to invest time and money into a school that just isn’t right.
