One of the hardest things students have to do when they head off to college is finding a balance between school, work, and their social life. Some students get totally consumed with one of these at the expense of the others. The one everyone hears about is the social life. Students sometimes focus too much on the social aspect of college, thanks to the freedom they suddenly have, and neglect their academics. Success can be achieved when they find a balance.

It is important your son or daughter develop some key characteristics of being a well-rounded student, so they can be better prepared to enter the workforce in the future.

These characteristics or skills include:

– Being goal-oriented
– Having a variety of interests/hobbies
– Developing solid Time Management Skills
– Seeking help when needed
– Volunteering in the community
– Taking time for themselves
– Enjoying learning
– Making earning good grades a priority
– Getting involved with extracurricular activities
– Becoming Network Oriented

To help your student become well-rounded, have them: prioritize their academics and extra-curriculars, study for exams, complete homework/essays on time, attend extra help sessions, get involved in clubs at school, or volunteer in their community. This will ensure they meet new people socially while keeping up with their work/school requirements. It is also a great idea for students to get involved right from the start of their freshman year, but also know it is never too late to jump in and finish strong!
