As a parent, it may seem easy and normal to want to guide your student into a certain career path or college because you know them so well and just want to help them out. However, the truth is, this decision should be up to your son or daughter. They should decide on who and what they want to become on their own. Encourage them to take advantage of their high school’s free resources such as career assessment tools and college fit assessments. They can also lean or resources that are available at their future college in the College Career Center.

It can be scary for your son or daughter to find a college major if they haven’t done their research or found something they find truly interesting. To ensure they don’t change their mind halfway through college, make sure they are fully invested in their chosen degree from the start. Students get into trouble when they lean on friends, family, relatives, or acquaintances to make their decisions for them. It is much better if they do their own research and come to a decision on their own.

To help your student discover their future career path, encourage them to take the time to think about what their calling might be. What are they passionate about, have them answer the who, what, when, where, how, and most importantly why they do what they do. If they are still unsure about their future, advise them to write down their likes and dislikes to gauge career opportunities that might fit them.

Finding what your student is passionate about will increase their chances of choosing the right path to follow in college. If they are still stuck, you may want to consider reaching out to us at College and Beyond LLC. I have a terrific program that helps students identify the types of careers and college majors to consider, based on who they are and the terrific things they are doing.
