Congratulations, the end of the semester means that your student is one step closer to graduation – no matter what grade they are in. This can be scary if your student just isn’t motivated or using their free time in a productive manner.

My suggestion is to encourage your student to assess what they have accomplished in this past semester and identify what they can do next semester to get involved and/or improve themselves or their resume of accomplishments. Having this time off is a great way for your student to decompress from the stressors of school and get in the right mindset for the second half of their school year. While sports might add to the pressure of balancing athletics with their academics, finding free time to be a teenager is important too. Encourage them to use their spare time wisely.

Some families have their children use this time of year to be proactive by doing community service or focusing on future standardized testing. This can be a great time for your student to get ahead by prepping for the ACT/SAT they likely will be taking in the spring. They can also use this time to start doing research on their future colleges and jotting down important dates and deadlines for the upcoming semester. Time flies by fast, so make sure you and your student map out what needs to be accomplished in the coming months so that success can be achieved.
