If you are lucky enough to have a student who has already been working on identifying the colleges they want on their short-list – congratulations! Hopefully, they have a variety of different types of colleges that fit the criteria they are looking for that also pass mom and dad’s test too.
If not, then here is how you can help your student narrow down their list to colleges that fit them the best. Take their college prospect list and start asking these important questions:
1) Is it the right academic fit?
2) Is it the right financial fit for your family?
3) Is it the right social fit?
4) Is it the right geographic fit?
5) Is it the right athletic fit? (ONLY IF your student is planning on playing a sport in college)
6) Is it the right artistic fit? (ONLY IF your student is planning on doing something in the arts in college)
Asking the right questions from the start allows you and your student to eliminate any colleges that do not fit their/your criteria. Putting together a great college short-list will give your student schools where they have the best chance to thrive and have a terrific college experience. From there, it will be easier to narrow down your students’ top picks by visiting each campus, taking plenty of notes, and having them apply early. By being engaged in this process early, you will be able to celebrate with your son or daughter when they get admitted to colleges that want them – as much as they want the college – and that fit what everyone is looking for. I call that a big success!
