Congratulations, as we approach the end of the fall semester, your student may be celebrating being half way finished with their school year – no matter what grade they are in. So, what do you do if things were a little rocky this semester or certain classes were overwhelming to them?

My suggestion is to encourage your student to assess what happened, identify what they have accomplished in this past semester and decide what they can do next semester to improve their grades, get involved and in turn build on their resume of accomplishments. Having this time off is a great way for your student to decompress from the stressors of school and get in the right mindset for the second half of their school year. For some however, sports likely continue during holiday break. It is important to stop and carve out some free time to be a teenager and spend quality time with family and friends. Encourage them to use their spare time wisely.

Some families have their children use this time of year to be proactive by doing community service or focusing on future standardized testing. This can be a great time for your student to get ahead by prepping for the ACT/SAT they likely will be taking in the spring. They can also use this time to start doing research on their future colleges and jotting down important dates and deadlines for the upcoming semester. Time flies by fast, so make sure you and your student map out what needs to be accomplished in the coming months so that success can be achieved.
