Why do students need to protect themselves on social media? All it takes is one false move, comment, or accusation to jeopardize or destroy years of hard work trying to get admitted to a chosen college. In this day and age, college admissions representatives often check a student’s social media accounts when they are making their final admissions decisions to verify they are not getting ready to admit a future problem student to their campus.

In recent years, certain social media platforms have been popularized by younger generations. Unfortunately, this has also led to a rise in social media scandals which have compromised student’s chances for potential scholarships, college admissions, friend groups, and their reputations.

How can your student avoid a social media scandal?

1. Ensure they are set to a private account and only follow people they know
2. Encourage them to think twice before posting/tweeting/uploading content or clicking on someone else’s feed
3. Remind them – if they wouldn’t say it in front of grandma, they shouldn’t say it online
4. Have them remove any insensitive/disrespectful content immediately and hope someone doesn’t find it again

Having your son or daughter proceed with caution on all social media platforms can help to protect them from making a consequential mistake.  It is always better to be safe than sorry.

Wishing you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving!
