Standardized tests like the ACT and SAT can feel overwhelming, but a low score isn’t the end of the world. If your teen is unhappy with their results, start by reflecting on their testing experience. Did stress, time management, or unfamiliarity with the format play a role? Identifying weak areas can help them prepare better for a retake.
Many students improve their scores on a second or third attempt, especially with targeted study. Options like tutoring, online courses, or prep books can make a big difference. Additionally, research colleges that “superscore” or are test-optional, allowing students to showcase other strengths like GPA and extracurriculars.
Another option to explore is the CLEP exam (College-Level Examination Program). CLEP allows students to earn college credit by passing exams in specific subject areas, potentially demonstrating mastery in key areas while saving on tuition. Success on CLEP exams can also strengthen an application by highlighting a student’s dedication to academics.
Encourage your teen to take a holistic approach to their college application. Leadership, community involvement, and compelling essays can leave a lasting impression on admissions committees.
