You may be saying – wait a minute Dan – didn’t you cover this in the #1 Biggest Mistake last week? Well yes, and no.  You see as often as I remind families to run their SAI /EFC – invariably families get busy with their busy lives and never get around to running their numbers – and this has the potential of creating a chain reaction of unintended consequences.

Just as a reminder:

  • Student Aid Index (SAI) is determined by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) – this is NEW as of last year.
  • Expected Family Contribution (EFC) is determined by completing the CSS Profile – used by 200+ colleges in addition to requiring the FAFSA.

The problem with not knowing your numbers is that your daughter or son might fall in-love with an out-of-budget college.

I encourage you to carve out a time to have the “Money Talk” where everyone comes together to work through your family’s college budget. Gather your factual and financial details and run your numbers, by CLICKING HERE. This calculator will show you what prospective colleges expect you to pay for college each year.  That way you can plan accordingly, have a realistic conversation, pick colleges that fit your family budget, THEN schedule your college visits.

It’s better to have this conversation sooner rather than later because we want your student to be looking at and visiting colleges they can attend without bankrupting your family in the process.
