The #1 Biggest Mistake families make in the college process – is waiting way too late to calculate their SAI / EFC:

• Student Aid Index (SAI) which is determined by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) – this is NEW.
• Expected Family Contribution (EFC) which is determined by completing the CSS Profile – used by 200+ colleges in addition to requiring the FAFSA.

These dollar amounts are what colleges expect you to pay for your son or daughter to attend their school before any financial aid will be offered. The unfortunate fact is that many families never take the time to sit down and run these numbers. Your SAI / EFC are calculated using mom and dad’s income and non-retirement assets and your student’s income and non-retirement assets. This may seem like a lot of information that you need to gather and disclose but the sooner you run your numbers, the better!

The good news – there are steps you can take today to prevent your family from making this big mistake .

Second, once you know how much the colleges think you can pay for school, sit down as a family, and talk about the reality of your situation, so that everybody is on the same page. There is nothing worse than families waiting too late to have the college money talk – usually in the spring of their student’s senior year after they receive their financial aid offers – when they often discover the college(s) of their child’s dreams is not in their budget.
