A gap year is when a student decides to delay starting college and takes time off of school for a variety of reasons. Students often share that a gap year gives them a clearer sense of purpose in life and removes the likeliness of school burnout or going to a college and it just not working out for any number of reasons. Sometimes this is an opportunity for a student to get a job to help pay for college, or travel abroad, do full-time community service, or jump into an internship in their future career path; while, other times this is because they just aren’t socially or emotionally mature enough to handle the transition of heading off to college or leaving home. Regardless of the reason for a gap year, it is important to have a plan.

When researching which college your student is considering applying to, it is critical that they check in with the admissions department and understand their gap year protocol/policy. Some colleges are open to students taking a gap year, but most will expect a student to apply for admissions prior to them doing it to lock in their spot the next year. There has been an increase in the number of students taking a gap year in the past few years so more colleges are open to his option; However, it is very important to note that if a student takes college classes during their gap year, they will no longer be eligible for any incoming freshman scholarships, so proceed with caution.

To determine if a gap year might be right for your daughter or son, be sure to assess what they want to study, what college(s) they want to attend, and what they are planning to do during their gap year. By having all of these facts, your student will be in a better position to make the right decision.
