It is college application season! This means that filling out the FAFSA or Free Applicant for Federal Student Aid is just around the corner. Your student can submit their FAFSA any time after October 1st of their senior year and the sooner you get it submitted after that date the better. Please don’t forget to setup your FSA ID (1 for your student and 1 for the parent completing the form) ASAP, so that you can login into the FAFSA and electronically sign it at the end.

Before you sit down to fill out this application online, make sure you and your student have gathered all the necessary financial documents you’ll need to answer every FAFSA question. These documents include: Social Security Numbers, Federal Income Tax Returns (from 2 years prior), W-2s, copies of Bank and Investment Statements (if applicable), and Records of untaxed income (example 401k contributions – if applicable). Having all of these financial and factual details handy will make the process much more efficient and less frustrating to you and your student.

Please note, some colleges that offer their own institutional aid on top of the Federal Aid will require your student to complete and submit a different financial aid form in addition to the FAFSA. This is called the CSS Profile which is used by many of the top colleges and universities and has even more detailed financial questions to answer. Be sure to check the websites for each of your students’ colleges to determine what type of financial aid is available and what forms must be submitted to qualify for these funds.
