The societal norm is for many students to attend college right after they graduate from high school. However, attending college and succeeding in college are two vastly different subjects. On top of that, some students take longer than the traditional 4 years to graduate from college for a number of reasons. This could include changing majors or colleges all together or needing to finish co-op or internship opportunities as part of their graduation requirements which can extend school by a semester or two.

To succeed in college, students need to know WHY they are going in the first place.

Some students attend college because their parents tell them that continuing their education is expected or because everyone else is going to college. Unfortunately, this strategy doesn’t always work out the way parents want it to because of any number of unforeseen circumstances. Maybe a student is still lost in deciding what they want to study or where they want to go to school. Perhaps they have already started their own business and wish to continue that path above going to college or possibly they are considering a career that doesn’t require a college diploma.

Before your son or daughter starts applying to colleges, be sure to dive deep and ask them why they want to go. As your student deepens their understanding of their why, they will be in a much better position to decide if college is for them and if yes, pick the right college(s) to apply to and the right major/career path to pursue.

Having clarity from the beginning will improve their chances of succeeding in college – and in the future as well.
