If your student has no idea what they want to be when they grow up or where they want to go to college, have no fear, this is more common than you may think.
Helping your daughter or son figure out what they are interested in pursuing can play a crucial role in mapping out their future plans. It is not uncommon for students to initially pick a college or major, and then later change their mind. Unfortunately, if this switch happens after the sophomore year, this can set your student and your college savings back. One of the best ways to help your student avoid making a switch like this is to sit down and help them map out their future.
As they return to high school this semester, challenge your daughter or son to find a topic that really interests them. If they don’t have any ideas, have them utilize the internet to do some research and try getting involved in doing some new activities. Whether it’s a class, a sport, or a hobby, this could be something that can help unlock their future. Sometimes the spark can come from a cool teacher they had or a role model they found in their dream career. For example, if your student enjoyed an engineering class they took in high school, encourage them to enroll in more STEM classes moving forward. Then, ask them to explore colleges that offer solid STEM Programs. Encourage them to do co-ops or internships in college so that they can take a career for a test ride.
Remember, time flies by fast, so make sure you and your student map out what needs to be accomplished in the coming weeks and months so that they can have a successful admissions process in the fall of their senior year of high school. This will allow them to transition into the right college, at the right price, pursue the right major or career path, so they can graduate right on time!
