Building a high school resume to use for college applications and scholarships can be a real challenge for some students. They often forget to include many of the activities or volunteer opportunities they participated in during prior school years. Missing any important items like this could result in a college thinking your student is lacking in some areas.
An easy way for your student to piece together the perfect resume is for them to keep track of all their accomplishments, awards, honors, clubs, and sports in one place: perhaps an accomplishment or activities file. By doing so, they will be able to decrease the amount of time they spend on creating their future college resume and ensure they don’t leave out any important details. I know in our household my wife kept a container full of all the Academic Awards my son and daughter received through the years which made it easy for them to capture everything when it came to resume building time.
Since many more people are choosing to go digital these days, consider helping your student create a LinkedIn Account. LinkedIn is a professional social media platform which allows the user to upload a digital resume and post about their achievements, jobs, relevant courses, and any awards/certifications earned. Note: some colleges have an option to insert a student’s LinkedIn URL into their college application, so please encourage your son or daughter to take advantage of this technology to show colleges how well-rounded they really are.
