Visiting a prospective college is the best way to narrow down your student’s list. Encourage them to create a short list of colleges they would like to visit and make note of which schools are close to home and those where you will need to schedule a distant trip. The best way to visit all of your son or daughter’s prospective colleges is to utilize future 3- or 4-day weekends or vacation times such as spring or summer break from school. Keep in mind that year-round sports, theatre productions or other academic or extracurricular clubs and activities can consume a lot of your student’s time, making the process of scheduling college visits that much more difficult.
Why make in-person college visits? Because this allows you and your student to get a feel for what the college would be like if they were to attend. These visits can also help your student determine if the colleges they are considering feel like their home-away-from-home. Also remember, some colleges track these visits as part of demonstrated interest to help them determine how serious a prospective student is in their school and impacts a student’s chances of getting admitted. Do your homework and find out if a college cares about these visits.
Finding the time to make these visits can help your daughter or son pick the right colleges to apply to in the future. Changing schools when a student determines they are at the wrong college can be painful when hard-earned scholarship dollars are given up, college credits are lost, and your student is forced to stay in school longer than they had expected. Help your student find the right fit from the beginning.
