The societal norm is for students to attend college right after they graduate from high school, however, attending college and succeeding in college are two vastly different things. In todays day and age, it is very common for students to take longer than the traditional 4 years to graduate.

Some students attend college because their parents tell them that continuing their education is expected or because everyone else is going to college. Unfortunately, this strategy doesn’t always work out the way parents want it to because of any number of things. Maybe a student is still lost on what they want to study or where they want to go to school. Perhaps they have already started their own business and wish to continue that path above going to college or possibly they began a career that doesn’t require a college diploma.

To succeed in college, students need to have a plan and a reason for WHY they are going to college in the first place. Before your student starts applying to college, be sure to dive deep and ask them why they want to go and what their future goals are. As your student deepens their understanding of answering their why, they will be in a much better position to pick the right college(s) to apply to and the right majors/career path to pursue. Having this understanding will improve their chances of succeeding in college – and becoming a statistic for all the right reasons.
